WhatsApp iPhone screenshotMOUNTAIN VIEW, USA – WhatsApp, arguably one of the most popular apps for smartphones, has come under scrutiny regarding its alleged violations of the international privacy laws related to phone numbers.

The application forces users to provide access to their entire address book and this seems to be in contrast with international laws.

WhatsApp is an instant messaging application predominantly used by those who don’t wish to spend money on SMS texting. It can be referred as an alternative for text messages, and it is estimated that more than a billion messages are transferred everyday through it.

As per a report by Reuters, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and the Dutch Data Protection Authority have jointly reported the irregularities pertaining to this application. WhatsApp requires access to all the contact numbers stored by the user and this is considered to be an unlawful activity. Both these agencies also mentioned that they would monitor the application and would penalize it if the irregularities continue.

WhatsApp refused to comment on the allegation.
