PARIS, France – Popular VideoLAN player VLC finally got its first Android beta version. At the moment the beta version supports only ARMv7 based devices, but the company is working on extending its reach.
As the beta notice states, after its download from Google Play, it is still pretty much unstable and is to be used cautiously as “it might kill your kitten, destroy your house, and start the Mayan apocalypse”, a very detailed disclaimer from the developers.
The VLC player is popular within PCs and laptops for its relatively small size, extremely wide range of supported video and subtitle formats and ability to play video URLs directly via the internet. Whether all of these capabilities will be available in the VLC for Android is still unclear. Several tests made so far confirm that the beta is a working player and there is still no data on video formats that did not play.
The availability of the VLC for Android is still limited as it just became accessible in Google Play for the US. There are, however, some unofficial nightly builds, that support wider range of hardware, but using them is always risky.
