Tactus touchscreen keysLAS VEGAS, USA – Tactus has developed one of the most promising touchscreen-related innovations by combining the features of the touch-screen and a physical keyboard.

Fremont, California-based Tactus’ morphing tactile surface transforms a touchscreen of a tablet or mobile phone into a keyboard with physical keys. Although PhoneRPT covered the June 2012 Tactus announcement, this time the company brought a full demo.

The device demonstrated at the recently-concluded CES 2013 uses the “world’s first dynamic tactile touchscreen”, where a tactile panel replaces the glass or plastic covering the touch sensors and display on the touchscreen. Small amounts of transparent fluid are stored in the panel, and when enabled, the fluid is drawn into specific parts of the screen to form a keyboard or even a gaming pad.

Tactus is not planning to release its own mobile devices. The company’s CEO and founder Craig Ciesla said that he is aiming to lure device-makers to integrate the virtual keyboards into their own products.

Tactus demonstrated its technology using a 7-inch Android tablet, although it said that that the innovation can also be used for larger devices.
