Sony Ericsson U5 Kurara live images (5)STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Sony Ericsson’s upcoming Symbian full-touchscreen U5 Kurara has been previewed in-depth, prior to its official announcement. The device rivals the i8910 Omnia HD in both looks and software, but comes slightly late to the market.

The preview confirms the presence of the 8.1 megapixel camera, a 3.5″ AMOLED touchscreen display, 720p HD video recording, and the Symbian S60 operating system. Other features comprise of the microSD memory card slot, 3.5mm audio jack, and microUSB connectivity.

For HD video capture, the 8.1 megapixel camera will be aided by the Cortex A8 chipset and 256MB of RAM, and it is likely that internal memory will be measured in GB.

Similar to the Sony Ericsson Satio, the U5 will also come preloaded with access to social networking portals Facebook and Twitter.

The battery is reportedly one of the weak points of the Kurara, being insufficient for average daily use.

The device is planned to cost about EUR 400 (US$599), which would be an ideal price to rival the Samsung i8910 Omnia HD, but there is a large gap in the release date.

Sony Ericsson had been rumoured to be betting large on Google Android smartphones, responsible for the latest hype in the smartphone market, while all manufacturers, including Nokia, were said to be ditching Symbian – Nokia itself will apparently use Maemo as its flagship operating system. The Kurara, or Sony Ericsson U5, could be one of the last high-end Symbian smartphones from the company.
