Samsung Patents Gesture Controls for Devices

SEOUL, South Korea – A new patent application by Samsung shows that in future, functions of touch displays might be controlled through air-gestures.

The application was originally filed by Samsung in Q2 2011 in Korea and Q2 2012 in USA.

The basic idea of the patent is to eliminate the need for physical remote controllers, particularly for Samsung HDTVs. However, for a tablet, a user may be able to use the air-gesture functionality full time or for any specific apps that are assigned to the device.

The invention will take the advantage of a specialized camera or multiple cameras with ultrasonic signals and sensors. These sensors will, hence, help to draw on a virtual screen area slightly above the touch display of a tablet.

The users will then be able to command the functions of a tablet, desktop or other device through air-gesture controls.
