Review: BlackBerry Launches New Bold 9930, Misses Mark

BlackBerry Bold 9330RENO, USA – Research in Motion has gone through quite a bit of turmoil this summer, and in the midst of it all launching a new device for Verizon Wireless subscribers. The BlackBerry Bold 9930 is the long awaited update to the bold product line, with new features and some old baggage.

It is not a 4G LTE device, therefore of limited in its appeal to Verizon users, with 4G LTE launched and expanding monthly.

The Bold 9930 is slim, light, and very well put together.  The QWERTY keypad is backlit, navigation is controlled by the capacitive touchscreen, the keyboard or the optical trackpad.  It measures 4.5 x 2.6 x 0.4 inches and weighs 4.6 ounces. Slightly wider than previous Bolds, which helps with the keypad and typing. The screen is 2.8 inches and has a beautiful color rich 640 x 480 pixel resolution rivaling that of the iPhone 4.

The 9930 also is capable of HD video recording, with storage by a micro SD memory card.  It will work on CDMA, GSM and UMTS networks, making it handy for the international traveler.

High speed data connectivity includes GPRS, 1XRTT, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA, and EVDO RevA., WiFi as well, with 2.4 and 5 GHz radios built in. It utilizes the BlackBerry OS 7, coupled with a 1.2GHz processor which yields nearly eight hours of battery life.

For those that need to stay with a BlackBerry device, the BlackBerry Bold 9930 is a good choice, updated to the latest that RIM have to offer. If only it supported 4G LTE!
