Nokia Throwing Everything it Can at the Market with the Nokia 5800
ESPOO, Finland and SAO PAULO, Brazil – Today marked the launch of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic with Comes With Music in Brazil, but most importantly, the launch of the Nokia 5800 Star Trek Edition in the UK. The Finnish giant is betting on every resource available to win the top position in the music-mobile industry.
In every occasion available, Nokia informs the press of the launch of the Nokia 5800 at a certain location, in order to broadcast its presence around the world. The 5800 was planned to be Nokia’s iPhone-killer, but for now, it hasn’t killed anything, selling only 3 million units globally since its launch in November.
The Comes With Music campaign was deemed by many as a failed project, as it wasn’t made available in many devices, and not well-marketed. In the UK, only 23 000 units pertaining to the campaign were sold.
The 5800 will be sold in Brazil by TIM, the first operator in the Americas to receive the Comes With Music service. The phone will be sold at BRL 399 (US$182.57) with a free-of-charge two-month unrestricted data package.
The Nokia 5800 Star Trek edition will be available in Phones4u stores from the 1st of May. The special edition phone will come with animated screensavers related to the Star Trek movie, three wallpapers, eight ringtones, and a “special Phazer application”.
Nokia also said on Tuesday that it will lay off 450 more workers worldwide, as a result of the global economic turndown.
