It’s difficult to believe sometimes that it is now 18 months since Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop made the historic announcement on 11 February 2011. Nokia, the then largest mobile company by volume was dropping its in-house smartphone platform Symbian and switching its efforts to the more modern but still miniscule Windows Phone. While Nokia hasn’t exactly flooded the market, their Windows Phone portfolio, the Lumia devices cover enough bases. At the mid-low end the Lumia 610 is the baby of the range, competing with a flood of cheap Androids. The Lumia 710 is unashamedly mid-range while the Lumia 800 bring Nokia’s superlative hardware chops to the mid to high range segment. And at the high end we have the Lumia 900, the subject of this review, the great big hope?

To say Nokia’s strategy generated some controversy would be a great understatement. While Symbian was losing favour and sales were slowing relative to Apple’s iOS and the rapidly growing Android, Windows Phone was barely making an impression. Indeed today, even with the added allure of the Nokia branding, Symbian continues to outsell all Windows Phone OEMs combined.

However, to add to the picture, Microsoft announced the future of the platform, the much talked about Windows Phone 8. Windows Phone 8 promises a lot but in doing so compatibility is broken to older devices, the Lumia 900 among them, which will receive what appears to be a cosmetic makeover.

But that is the future. This is now.
