JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – The Nokia E7 is more than just a bigger, keyboard-equipped version of the camera-trigger-happy N8, and the phone-maker is set to prove that.
PhoneRPT.com got hold of a pre-production model ahead of the South African launch, which occurred on Wednesday. As usual with prototype software, we will not be reviewing the operating system as it is not 100% bug-free, and also because our Nokia N8 review contains a comprehensive overview of the Symbian^3 platform.

The E7 faces tough competition when it comes to smartphone touchscreen-keyboard combination models, most of them equipped with 1GHz+ processors and running on either Google Android or Windows Phone 7 – the latter platform will make its way to Nokia devices, but the E7 will not be compatible with it. Considering that the phone being reviewed here is powered by a 680MHz with 256MB of RAM – common in low-end Android handsets – its underlying hardware is not very impressive, even though there’s a Broadcom BCM2727 GPU for graphics-intensive applications, games and video playback.
One should consider that low clockspeed doesn’t necessarily predict a smartphone’s failure, as smart software compensates for it, but at this stage in production, it’s difficult to stand by the E7′s operating system, but from what I was able to see, HD video (at least in WMV format) is played back without a glitch on the 4″ touchscreen display.
