ESPOO, Finland – Nokia has announced a new mapping app, HERE, that will be supported by most of the popular smartphone operating systems.
The company has, for now, released the app for Windows Phone devices, such as the Nokia Lumia 920 and on iOS (pending App Store approval). The app will soon be arriving on Android and on Firefox OS as well.
Nokia HERE is based on HTML5, which makes it quite optimized with mobile devices. With HERE, a user can get live updates regarding traffic information and incidents. It also features schedules, routes of public transport and driving directions for more than 500 cities. A user may also save a location for further exploration in several different zoom levels, and can also add places to their favorites.
Moreover, the app also guides turn-by-turn through voice navigation, so that one does not have to look into the phone over and again. Furthermore, HERE also shows the 25 best places around a user and describes them.
To continually improve and update the 3D maps, Nokia has also announced the planned acquisition of Earthmine.
