Nokia 808 PureView Full Review

The Nokia 808 PureView really is the finest Symbian device ever produced, but is that good enough? When looking at aspects like multimedia and photography it most certainly is. When looking at it from a more connected point-of-view, not so much. When really delving into user interface and experience and the ecosystem, it looks less compelling. The last shot against the 808 PureView is pricing. It is a very expensive device, and certainly here in South Africa it had one of the highest launch prices for a Nokia device that I can remember in the last three of four years, rubbing shoulders with the Galaxy S3 and the 16GB iPhone 4S. Some will argue that the technology and the build quality mean that a premium price tag can be justified, but the market might suggest otherwise. I just don’t think this device can be sold on the strength of its imaging capabilities to the masses.

Ultimately then, the Nokia 808 PureView is very clearly aimed at Symbian and photography enthusiasts who are not too fussed about ecosystems and apps. It’s a little slice of history and in that respect can be worth a premium for these people. The real hope with the 808 PureView is that the technology is bigger than the device, and lives on in later Nokia devices. Indeed, the Lumia 920 has  a PureView badged camera that addresses other aspects of mobile photography. Even if the methodology is different the intent is there. And one would hope that should future PureView devices gain traction, it would encourage other manufacturers to push the envelope more with the imaging capabilities of their high-end devices.

A proof of concept then, and a very good one it is, but one that is probably not primed for the mass market.
