Nano-SIM Cars Coming to South Africa, Along with the iPhone 5

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – The main issue pertaining to the release of the iPhone 5 in South Africa, namely the unavailability of nano-SIM cards in the local market, has finally been settled.

Unlike its predecessors, the iPhone 5 uses a nano-SIM card, which is 40-percent smaller than the current micro-SIM, in keeping with the reduction of iPhone 5’s thickness to 7.6mm. Although several leading mobile operators have been introducing nano-SIM cards ever since the launch of iPhone 5, it was only last week that South African network operator Vodacom received the first shipment of nano-SIMs in the country.

Former reports indicated restrained responses from SA’s mobile operators regarding the future availability of nano-SIMs in the local market. Thus, it was believed that the release of iPhone 5 in the country would get delayed significantly. Cellucity has confirmed that its outlets are now ready to sell Vodacom’s nano-SIMs. Meanwhile, Vodacom has also released a list of its outlets offering nano-SIM stock.

Nevertheless, Apple still hasn’t confirmed the release date of the iPhone 5 in SA. However, many believe that it will hit the local market in late October or early November.
