MWC: Rambus Binary Pixel Brings SLR-like Dynamic Range to Photos

Mobile World Congress, BARCELONA –¬†Rambus Inc. says its new innovation, dubbed “binary pixel technology”, would be able to dramatically improve photos taken from smartphones and other devices.

The company says that while the resolution and frame rates in mobile cameras have seen improvement, enhancements in image quality are lagging. Current camera sensors are still unable to fully capture what the human eye can see as they are unable to record light above a specific saturation point.

Binary pixel technology claims to mimic the brilliance of human visual processing by setting light thresholds and oversampling. The new imaging chip records when a pixel has received a certain amount of light, then resets it, and, in effect, restarts the exposure. The result is a high dynamic range (HDR) from a single shot exposure, as well as improved low-light sensitivity for better videos and photos in any lighting condition.

Rambus says the new technology can easily be incorporated into CMOS sensors using current manufacturing methods, and that it isn’t limited to phone sensors.
