MMS Bomber Phone Virus On the Loose in China
CHINA – Symbian S60 third-edition smartphone owners in China, beware. The MMS Bomber virus is reportedly affecting users since February, as an app that has to be installed by the smartphone owner.
The modus operandi of the virus resembles another the one of a similar virus which spread itself in almost the same manner, sending MMSes to contacts in the user’s phone book until the airtime runs out.
The installation of the virus is left to the user, therefore if the smartphone owner is cautious, it can be easily avoided.
Removing it should be fairly easy, with most smartphones in the market allowing a complete reinstallation of the operating system, although most, if not all content on the handset would be lost. Hard formats may not be possible as the virus disables the phone’s system management utilities.
The virus for now is contained to China, although it is likely that it will spread to other regions.
