Jolla logoHELSINKI, Finland – Jolla, the Finnish company empowered by former Nokia employees, seems to be getting back in business as it has announced a new MeeGo-based operating system under the codename Sailfish.

Sailfish is a project which had been abandoned recently by Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, following the arrival of the Nokia N9. Sailfish is known to be an open source OS, although it will also include some licensed user interface features. It is believed that Sailfish will soon make its way towards OEM adoption as well.

The Wall Street Journal revealed that Jolla has managed to acquire funds worth €200 million for this new project. The company has already invested €10 million in starting up the project.

Jolla is planning to release a new device based on Sailfish next month. Obviously, under the present circumstances, it will have to face the competition from the multitude of latest smartphones dominating the market.
