PayPass trialWATERLOO and MONTREAL, Canada – BMO Bank of Montreal, RIM, and MasterCard are starting a four month trial for BlackBerry smartphones (in Canada), of PayPass Tap & Go payment service. The service requires a PayPass mobile tag bonded to the BlackBerry device, and one of the 8,500 merchants in Canada that support the technology.

With PayPass, consumers in Canada will be able to obtain their merchandise, wave the BlackBerry at the terminal, and be charged for the merchandise, with a paperless receipt sent to consumers’ e-mail on the BlackBerry almost immediately.

In comparison, Visa in the USA has embedded Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology called “blink” in some of its credit cards. PayPass is also offered in the USA and in several other countries around the world. One would expect a trial in the US shortly, assuming the trial in Canada goes well. In Japan, users have been using cell phones to make everyday purchases for years, paying one bill to their cell phone provider. That system does not use a separate RFID chip to enable the user’s charges.
