KDE Developer Releasing Open Tablet Spark in May

Spark Tablet Mer Plasma Active KDECALGARY, Canada – The release of a new tablet called Spark, which runs a free open source operating system by the name of Mer, has been announced by Aaron Seigo, a senior developer at KDE.

The new Spark tablet will come with mid-range specifications, including a 7” capacitive multi-touch display, a 1GHz AMLogic ARM processor, 512MB internal memory, a separate Mali-400 GPU, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, 4GB internal storage with an SD card slot to upgrade the capacity further and online connectivity using Wi-Fi.

As well as the Mer operating system, the Spark will also bring with an open source user interface that has been created by the KDE project called Plasma Active. This user interface has been designed to take full advantage of the unlocked hardware on the new tablet and even more freedom will be given to users with open services and content marketplace created by the open source community.

The expected cost of the Spark tablet is around €200 and users can already pre-order the devices which are expected to ship around May 2012, although both the price and the availability date are subject to change closer to the day.
