iPad Hacked to Mount External USB Drives

GLOBAL – Apple’s iPad may be selling faster than hot cakes worldwide, but the latest gadget from Cupertino still lacks some of the most commonly-used features. Be it the absence of multi-tasking or the ability to connect Bluetooth peripherals, come 7th of June, most of these complaints will be history as Apple is widely expected to release its next generation iPhone OS 4 during the WWDC in San-Francisco.

However, there are still certain features that the iPhone OS 4.0 is expected to miss: external USB connectivity being one of them. This is where the jailbreak-community comes into play by bringing features that Apple would never release.

Multi-tasking has been available for jailbroken iPhones since a year, and now, the hacker community has joined hands to mount external USB drives on iPad. The hack is not straight-forward and certainly not for mobile usage. However, iPad users will be glad to have such a feature, even when it means dabbling around with metres of cables and being tied down to a desktop/laptop.

The hack involves the iPad’s camera adapter for USB connectivity and will need an external USB power source to power the USB drive. Further, a desktop/laptop is needed to gain access to iPad SSH. Once connected, the user will have to mount the drive by typing certain commands into the SSH, as seen in the demo video below.

The hack will function only on jailbroken iPads as SSH access is blocked by default by Apple. With iPad making inroads into markets worldwide, the hacker community can be expected to release more handy mods for the latest gadget from Apple.
