Indian Government Buys 100 000 $40 Tablets

NEW DELHI, IndiaAakash tablet manufacturer Datawind announced the completion of its $40 Aakash 2 tablet project.

As a part of the deal, the Indian Government received about 100 000 tablets which would be distributed to students at a subsidized price. Datawind developed the first Aakash tablet for India’s Ministry of Human Resources Development and it was distributed to students in order to promote ubiquitous internet usage.

As a part of the tender, DataWind supplied 98,000 Aakash 2 tablets and 2000 tablets with recommendations for Aakash 3. The Aakash 3 tablet is the first among the series to feature a built-in quad-band EDGE modem. A consumer version of this tablet is also launched into the market.

The Aakash 3 tablet will feature a 7-inch display screen with 480 x 800 pixel resolution. Other features in this tablet include Android 4.0 (ICS) OS, 1 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, 4 GB internal memory, and a secondary camera. This device is also expected to feature a SIM slot for voice calling support.

In addition to completing the government bid, DataWind also mentioned that it has completed almost all the pre-paid backlog orders. The brand also promises that new orders will be processed within 72 hours.
