CES: NVIDIA Launches Portable Console, Tegra 4 Chip

Nvidia Tegra 4 chipLAS VEGAS, USA – Chipmaker NVIDIA has made two big announcements during the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2013 – the first is the new Tegra 4 processor for smartphones and tablets, and the other is the company’s own handheld gaming device.

NVIDIA claims Tegra 4 to be the world’s fastest mobile processor yet. It can be used in a range of devices including smartphones, tablets, PCs and gaming consoles. The Tegra 4 is a quad-core processor with 72 GPU cores., and the 4-plus-1 architecture from the firm incorporates a quad-core CPU along with a battery-saver-core.

The NVIDIA handheld gaming console is referred to as Project Shield. Its main focus is to combine the high-speed computing capability from NVIDIA with Android’s flexibility.

The device developed from this project will support Android, as well as PC games. This will be an advanced gaming device for hardcore gamers who like to play anywhere on the go, and will compete against the Ouya Android gaming console.
