BlackBerry Storm 3WATERLOO, Canada – The Storm line from Research in Motion is getting an update with the BlackBerry Storm 3.

The follow-on to the Storm 2 will be a more robust device with a more powerful processor, more memory, some top-end features and new additions. Speculation is that the device will have two or three launch versions for different carriers around the world. With availability late this year, timing for upgrades from older Storms will fit nicely.

The Storm 3 will run OS 6.1, OpenGL ES, have a 1.2GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM with 8GB of on-board storage, a microSD memory card slot, a 5 megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording, and Wi-Fi. The usual Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR is complemented by a magnetometer, proximity sensor, and accelerometer sensors. GPS is included of course and the device will be able to operate as a 3G mobile hotspot. The global version will have the quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE radio with the tri-band UMTS/HSPA radio as well. Speculation on the Verizon version for the USA would be CDMA/GSM or even better, 4G LTE for the new network.

An interesting addition for this version is the optical trackpad to make navigating the device easier. The screen measures 3.7″ and is a capacitive display with 800×480 pixels in resolution. The BlackBerry Storm 3 looks quite similar to the Torch 2 without the sliding keyboard.
