Ripple tinyHipposWATERLOO, CanadaBlackBerry-maker RIM acquired tinyHippos, a small Ontario, Canada-based company that makes a cross-platform mobile application development and testing tool.

This is another in the series of acquisitions to bolster RIM’s capabilities on the software and applications side of the business.

The company was acquired for its “extensive experience in web and mobile widget/web development,” Tyler Lessard, RIM’s vice president of global alliances and developer relations, said on the developer’s blog on Friday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The BlackBerry PlayBook is set to launch in two weeks, going against heavy market share control from Apple and the Android based devices. RIM has a lot of catch up to do, and the driving tablet use model is apps. Applications for the PlayBook are far behind the iPad and Android devices, this acquisition should help the BlackBerry devices accelerate application development and testing, allowing more apps to enter the market faster. Coupled with the ability of the PlayBook to support Android apps, the PlayBook could get a jumpstart at launch from these activities.

The launch of the PlayBook is going to be a huge investment for RIM, expect to see all kinds of marketing efforts and more advertisements than a presidential election.
