Android 5.0 Jelly Bean, Open Source May Be a Thing of the Past

Google Chrome Android 4.0 Ice Cream SandwichLAS VEGAS, USA – Although the most recent release of Android – 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich – is still available in only 1 % of the Android powered devices, there is new Android 5.0 coming this year.

It will be called Jelly Bean and it will focus on tablets and laptops, having bigger connectivity with Chrome OS and better options for booting along with Windows 8.

This expected release is raising again the question about the fragmentation of the Android OS, as it seems that there is no much legacy support between the different versions of the operating system.

The fragmentation issue was pointed out by the CEO of HP, Meg Whitman, which said that this along with the fact that iOS is a closed operating system makes their WebOS project even more beneficial. Whitman added also that the union between Google and Motorola may mean a “closed system” end for Android.

In the meantime, Motorola announced plans to roll out Android 4.0 updates for their devices over the course of the second and third quarters.
