Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 GingerbreadSTOCKHOLM, SwedenSony Ericsson has announced that the Xperia X10 will be receiving an update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

After putting a hard stance on upgrades for the Xperia X10 and saying the device would remain at Android version 2.1, Sony Ericsson changed their tone and announced they would upgrade the X10 to version 2.3. This is exciting news for Xperia X10 users but comes with some drawbacks as well. Doing the upgrade will cause the X10 to lose some of its current features including the camera UI will be replaced with the standard Android interface, Moxier will be replaced by Android standard EAS, Mediascape will be replaced by SE’s new media experience widgets, DRM keys for protected content will be lost, and the SE back up and restore feature will be lost.

The Xperia X10 will be the only Sony Ericsson device out of the Xperia Mini, Xperia Mini Pro, and Xperia X8 to receive the Gingerbread update. The update can only be done via a PC as well so there will be no OTA update for these devices. Another drawback is that the device cannot be reverted back to Android 2.1 if you don’t like Android 2.3.

The major perk to this however would be going from 2.1 to 2.3 will give you Flash support and the ability to use Adobe Air. That opens a whole world of media and games to access and a better overall website browsing experience.

The update should be available soon using Sony Ericsson’s PC client.
