Vodafone HTC SmartNEWBURY, UK – A smartphone costing sub-$130 is now a reality all thanks to Vodafone. The UK head-quartered cellular network company has unveiled a self-branded handset running on Android 2.2 Froyo available at less than $130.

The handset, which is christened Vodafone Smart, is preloaded with Android apps such as Gmail, Google Maps, Google Talk, and will have full access to the Android Market. It will be launched in the next few months in all its markets, and is mainly targeted at the prepaid customer.

On the hardware front, the Vodafone Smart will be loaded with a 2-megapixel camera, a 2.8″ touchscreen display, 3G, Bluetooth, complete with Wi-Fi support. Smartphones account for more than 40% of total sales for Vodafone in Europe, so adding a device within easy reach of the consumer, this is a great step and an aggressive strategy adopted by Vodafone.

At Vodafone’s South African subsidiary Vodacom’s annual results presentation in Midrand, CEO Pieter Uys spoke about cheaper smartphones being announced by the company and added to its portfolio of devices, he further added that the time is not very far, when it will be offering handsets at sub $100 range which will be introduced in South Africa.
