MWC: Samsung Galaxy S5 and Gear Fit Officially Unveiled
BARCELONA, Spain – Samsung has renewed its flagship smartphone by announcing the Samsung Galaxy S5 on day one of the Mobile World Congress 2014.
The Korean giant labels the Galaxy S5 as a device “designed for what matters most to consumers”. The smartphone has improved upon different performing areas by featuring a more advanced camera (with 4K video recording), dedicated fitness tools (heart-rate monitor), enhanced device protection features (fingerprint scanner) and fast network connectivity (LTE Cat 4).
Taking a look at its specs, the Galaxy S5 sports a 5.1” full HD Super AMOLED display, a 2.5GHz quad-core processor, Android KitKat 4.4.2, a 16 MP primary and 2 MP front-facing camera. The camera software allows for rich HDR tones capture, Virtual Tour shot, Selective Focus, and video recording at 4K.
The handset is IP67-certified which means it is both water and dust-resistant.
The device offers multiple connectivity features, such as Wi-Fi 802.11 with MIMO 2×2, IR, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 and USB 3.0. It also comes with additional built-in sensors including heart-rate sensor, ambient light sensor, fingerprint scanner, Gesture (IR) and other conventional ones.
Samsung has ensured a substantial battery capacity of 2800mAh, offering up to 21 hours of talk-time, and an additional 24-hour use in Ultra Power Saving Mode, where the screen can even be limited to grayscale colours.
Samsung also ventured into the fitness smart-wearable device market by launching the new Gear Fit, that offers a small 1.84” curved Super AMOLED screen offering 432×128 resolution.
The Gear Fit can be used for multiple purposes, such as a pedometer, sleep monitor, heart-rate monitor, and by examining these, it can provide workout suggestions. The smartband from Samsung will even notify users of calls and e-mails and has features like Smart Relay and Media Controller.
The Gear Fit has a changeable band which is available in different colors of orange, black and mocha grey, allowing users to style up in their own way. The device is also IP67-certified, making it a dust and water-resistant. This smartband offers Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, which provides connection to smartphones.
