Nokia E71 Microsoft office mobileNEW YORK, USA – Nokia and Microsoft have announced a partnership to bring Microsoft Office Mobile to a wide range of Nokia devices, starting with the business-oriented models in the E-series line.

Nokia smartphones have had support for Microsoft Office documents for some time, but only with limited functionality. With Microsoft Office Mobile, which will be called Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile on the Nokia platform, the company will now be able to offer a full office software suite for the first time.

The mobile version of Microsoft Office has existed since the year 2000 when it was released as part of the mobile version of the Microsoft Windows operating system, at the time named Pocket Office. It has been developed continuously as part of Windows Mobile ever since.

The announcement that Nokia and Microsoft will not only market their products together but also work together to develop the mobile office platform comes in the wake of Google Android and iPhone OS growing in functionality and gaining marketshare from Windows Mobile and Symbian OS. Nokia and Microsoft have a week history of co-operating.

Mobile workers are the primary target for office suites running on smartphones. The number of mobile workers is estimated by IDC to reach 1 billion in year 2011.
