Samsung M810 Pixon 12SEOUL, South Korea Samsung has taken the mobile world by surprise by announcing the release of the world’s first 12 megapixel camera-phone, the Samsung M810 Pixon 12, for the latter half of June 09 (Europe) and early August (other regions). The Pixon 12 is an upgraded version of 8 megapixel camera-phone Pixon, released in September 2008.

Samsung is targeting the camera-phone market with its Pixon series, and this latest phone is a result of extensive customer research program, highlighting demand for a camera-phone capable of capturing high-quality photographs and sharing images on the move. In addition to these components, the M810 has certain value-added features, such as speedy access to camera mode, fast shutter speed and quick browsing, turning the capture of high-quality images on cellphones a child’s play.

In addition to having a 12 megapixel sensor, M810 is equipped with a 28 mm wide angle lens, Xenon flash, power LED flash, and autofocus. There is a dedicated camera-power key, giving users fast one-touch access to camera. M810 sports a number of innovative camera features, such as touch autofocus tracking, allowing users to select an object to focus which will be subsequently tracked automatically; and smart auto feature, which automates the scene and mode selection, depending on the scene, object, background, and lighting. The camera also enables geotagging, and video recording with a resolution of 720×480 pixels at 30fps, which makes it a complete camera phone.

With M810, Samsung has decided to turn to AMOLED displays, this one is a 3.1” touchscreen with 720×480 pixels of resolution. It should be noted that AMOLED is lighter on battery consumption and trumps LED by offering better visibility in sunlight. The other specifications include 150 MB internal memory, a microSD memory card slot (expandable to 16GB), GPRS and EDGE, HSPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB connectivity. At 108x53x13.8mm, it’s a tad narrower than the original Pixon, which sported a 3.2” TFT screen.

With Samsung Share Pix, M810 users can instantaneously share their images and videos through popular networking sites such as Facebook, Picasa Flickr, MySpace, Photobucket, and Friendster, over Wi-Fi or HSUPA.

It is interesting to note that Sony Ericsson was the first to announce a 12 megapixel camera phone – the Satio (reviewed by PhoneReport at the Mobile World Congress 2009 as the Idou) – in February this year, but Samsung beat Sony Ericsson by releasing the first 12 megapixel camera, Pixon 12 (M180) four months earlier to the Satio’s planned release in October 2009. The same occurred when Sony Ericsson first announced an 8 megapixel camera-phone – the C905 Cyber-shot – but Samsung launched its i8510 INNOV8 prior to its competitor.

Specifications wise, though both Satio and Pixon 12 have similar camera specs, the Satio has better features in other departments, such as operating system and aesthetics. The Satio is based on the S60 5th edition, while the Pixon 12 will sport the proprietary Samsung OS. The S60 5th edition has taken off in grandeur with the launch of the Ovi Store, and the list of supported mobile phones is increasing every day. The Satio is slightly longer and sleeker than the Pixon 12, and comes in three attractive colours: Black, Silver and Bordeaux. Therefore, the Satio beats the Pixon 12 by providing a customizable OS and improved aesthetics, although the Pixon 12 has an edge as it supports DivX/XviD videos. While it is difficult to judge which is the better handset of the two, the Satio is expected to be priced higher than the Pixon 12, and depending on that, users can opt for a cellphone that suits their taste and budget.
