winmobileThe next generation of the popular Windows Mobile OS could be available as soon as 6 months from now.

Succeeding the Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, the Windows Mobile 6.5 could be, according to sources,  announced sometime between the February 16th, to the 19th, dates in which the Mobile World Congress 2009 will take place in Barcelona.

The Windows Mobile 6.5 is a step closer to the much hyped Windows Mobile 7 which will pack innovation in terms of touchscreen, gesture, and motion control. There is no confirmation whether the version 7 has been replaced by 6.5 number, as both MWg and HTC were rumoured to launch WM7-based handsets this quarter.

Microsoft is also expected to announce three new services for current Windows Mobile devices.

SkyBox will enable users to synchronize their phone content and information with the internet so that automated data backup is more easier to perform. The second service that Microsoft is expected to announce is SkyLine, which will let users easily synchronize and set up phones with Exchange Hosting. The final announcement is the mobile application market, SkyMarket, a direct competitor to Apple’s AppStore and Google Android’s AppMarket.

New phones based on this software platform should also be revealed from HTC, and perhaps other manufacturers.
