Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 Hands On

Today I had the opportunity to trial, for a few minutes, one of the devices that I was quite interested in, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1, the first SE phone with Windows Mobile OS.

I was not able to use the phone for more than 10 minutes but I was able to note the following features: the most attractive first-glance features to me are the weight, it is slightly heavy, but usual with high-end devices, and the arc-slider which is beautiful and gives the device an interesting style.

Another feature that has been discussed in every review about this device are the Panels that show different applications and available screens, these panels allow an easy access and are very appealing to the user.

The screen size is appropriate for a high-end smartphone, it has a sight-comfortable font size and good distribution of the screen layout. The keyboard felt great even with my large hands.

It has a 3.2 megapixel camera which I did not give much attention to. I tried only two features on this phone, one of them was a Google search to see the response time for opening Opera, and the load times of web pages; the other one was the image gallery.

When I opened Google search I felt that it took a lot time opening the web browser, after I did a Google Search it was also slow when loading the results. As you can see in the video shown below, I first searched Xperia and tried to open the SE site for this device, it did not render correctly, even though the phone was connected to a 3G network. After that, I opened the PhoneReport site and it loaded much faster as I was expecting, because it was the mobile version.

The second component I tried was the Image Gallery, which is not shown on the video. Comparing it to my E71 gallery, the X1 has a much better UI for the gallery, it felt more user-friendly such as the iPhone’s gallery.

Reviewing this device for no more than 10 minutes gave me a great first impression and left me with the desire of giving this smartphone a full review after a few weeks of use. The arc-slider and the panels are very appealing to the sight and enrich the user experience. The response time in general was slightly low but perhaps that will be solved with a firmware update.

Sony Ericsson is a joint venture established on October 3, 2001 by the Japanese consumer electronics company Sony Corporation and the Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson to make mobile phones. The Xperia X1 is a smartphone from Sony Ericsson, built by High Tech Computer Corporation (HTC), and is the first in the manufacturer’s Xperia series. The X1 was first presented at the 2008 Mobile World Congress.
