NTT Develops Laser that Transmits Data at 10 Gb/s

TOKYO, Japan – Telecommunications company NTT claims to have developed an ultra-compact semiconductor laser that is able to transmit at high-speed while expending power at a minimum, a necessity for chips of tomorrow’s gadgets, including smartphones.

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) said it is aiming to market this laser, which it dubs LEAP laser, in three years. The company will attempt to manufacture a large-scale photonic network circuit by around 2022 to make it possible to commercialize on-chip data transmission in microprocessors.

NTT points out that the explosive growth of the Internet and smartphones will increase network traffic 200 times in a decade. With the release of more powerful smartphones and supercomputer technology, power consumption of electronic devices is also expected to skyrocket. It says that it has a solution: it has developed a technology for off-chip and on-chip optical interconnection in microprocessors that reduces the threshold current of 390 microamperes, thus realizing ultra-low power consumption. Its LEAP laser has achieved the world’s lowest threshold current of 4.8 microamperes.

The results confirm that photonic crystal lasers can be put into transmitters for optical interconnections in microchips. The complete results are available in Nature Photonics magazine published May 26th.
