Fairphone Launches Ethical, Conflict-Free Smartphone

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands – Fairphone has begun taking pre-orders for the world’s first ethically-sourced smartphone.

The Android 4.2 Jelly Bean-running handset sports a 4.3-inch qHD 540 x 960 touchscreen (Dragontrail Glass), MediaTek’s MTK6589M quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 1GB of RAM, 8-MP and 1.3-MP cameras, a 2 000mAh battery and 16GB of internal storage.

Fairphone is taking pre-orders for EUR 325 ($430) with shipping in the Fall, if plans go on schedule. The Dutch start-up needs to sell 5 000 orders to start production. More than 2 900 orders had already been placed as of May 28th.

The company claims that the device will be constructed in an environmentally-friendly and pro-humanitarian manner. The handset itself will be made with materials from a completely transparent supply chain. As part of its social values, the company guarantees that the device is not being made by underage or underpaid employees, as well as workers under duress.

Fairphone will be donating EUR 3 to electronic recycling initiatives in Ghana for every Fairphone sold and will soon launch a buyback program for old devices.
