CAPE TOWN, South Africa – PhoneRPT examined the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 at the Samsung Africa Forum earlier this month, a tablet that comes with the now-renowned S Pen.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 hands-on review

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 is a tablet version of the Note II, a phablet that has a 5.5″ HD-resolution touchscreen, a quad-core 1.6 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, and of course, the S Pen stylus that allows it to carry the nameĀ Note. The 8.0 version is a clever offer from the South Korean company, as a stylus is a perfect companion to a tablet, allowing users to comfortably write notes and draw paintings. In terms of specifications, the Galaxy Note 8.0 brings the same processor and RAM as its smaller sibling, but its display, being limited to HD resolution, has a far lower pixel density than other high-end tablets in the market. The device also falls shorter than the Note II as it has a 5 megapixel camera instead of an 8 MP unit, lacks FM radio, and its most expensive variant brings 32 GB in storage, while the phablet can be bought with 64 GB.

When compared to the Note 10.1, an S-Pen-carrying tablet with an even larger display, the Note 8.0 has a faster processor (1.6 against 1.4 GHz), and smaller battery at 4600 versus 7000 mAh unit.

With the short time available to test the device, it was obvious that the new rounder corners give it a stylish look, together with its branded case. It is a light tablet, but it does not have the build quality that can be found on the iPad Mini, its competitor.

The low-resolution on the Note 8.0 is also a minus, since high-end smartphones that have been launching from January this year feature full HD resolution, tightly packed in 5″ screens. The S Pen, resizeable and multi-window functions are the only aspects that will give it an advantage, with both business and personal-use potential, as highlighted in our Galaxy Note 10.1 review.
