Mobile World Congress, BARCELONA –¬†Chipmakers Marvell, Intel and ST-Ericsson unveiled processors for mobile devices at the MWC last week.

Intel touted its low-power Atom chip platforms, saying that it will start shipping Merrifield, a 22-nanometer Atom chip for mobile devices, that will feature the Intel 3-D Tri-Gate transistor architecture, designed to drive down power consumption. The company also announced its newest dual-core Atom chip, Clover Trail+, a 32-nm chip that offers energy efficiency and battery life that matches current high-end Android phones. Clover Trail+ is said to provide twice the performance and up to three times the graphical abilities of its predecessor.

ST-Ericsson unveiled a new chip that is clocked at 3 GHz – the NovaThor L8580 features four Cortex A9 cores and was built using the 28nm FD-SOI manufacturing technology, so as not to drain battery life. The chip supports dual cameras, HD voice and LTE.

Nvidia showcased the Tegra 4, a quad-core processor with a fifth power-saving core, boasting faster clock speed and 72 GPU cores. The chip-maker also announced the Tegra 4i, a lighter and more compact version which uses Cortex A9 cores instead of the newer Cortex-A15, and has 60 graphics cores compared to 72 on the regular version. The Tegra 4i has an integrated modem and can run at up to 2.3GHz, although it has lesser graphical capabilities and smaller memory support.

Marvell meanwhile unveiled what it calls the world’s most advanced single-chip quad-core world phone processor. The brand says that the PXA1088 offers universal connectivity – able to beam 3G data to mobile devices anywhere in the world with its auto-roaming and compatibility with 21Mbps HSPA+, TD-HSPA+, EDGE, and WCDMA networks. It further states that the low-cost chip will deliver high performance and low-power mobile computing to budget phones. Marvell expects devices powered by the PXA1088 to arrive within the first half of this year.
