Ubuntu tabletLONDON, UK – Software developer Canonical has unveiled the tablet version of the popular Ubuntu open-source operating system for computers.

Canonical in January announced Ubuntu Phone, which features a gesture-heavy interface and the ability to run the desktop version when docket to a monitor. The handsets are expected to arrive in shelves in October.

Ubuntu tablets, like the smartphones, will also be competing with the Apple and Android-dominated market.

Canonical has demonstrated the Ubuntu tablet interface, featuring actual multi-tasking and a split-screen mode. Via the side stage multitasking, a user can simultaneously run a smartphone app on the smaller portion of the screen, and a tablet app on the other side. Additional features include full disk encryption and multiple user accounts.

The tablet and smartphone interfaces are powered by exactly the same code that provides Ubuntu’s PC and TV interfaces, thus enabling true convergence across different screen sizes.

With Ubuntu on its way to tablets and smartphones, Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth believes that Ubuntu is the future of personal computing.
