Future Cellphones May Charge by Shaking

Nokia morphBLACKSBURG, USA – Cellphones of the future may not run the risk of getting out of juice at crucial times. A new technology is under the pipeline and this enables cellphones to get charged simply by shaking them.

The idea here is to convert the mechanical vibrations into electrical voltage that can power the cellphone. Through this technology, even the keypad click and speaker audio can produce the required electrical voltage.

The technological research at Virginia Tech by Shashank Priya and team focuses on piezoelectric forces that can be produced through vibration. There are piezoelectric materials that exhibit the property of generating power when subjected to mechanical stress. When an onboard piezoelectric charger is incorporated into cellphones, it can produce the power required during emergency situations.

The power generated through this process will be minimal and it certainly won’t be enough to power a cellphone to full charge. However, during emergency situations, users can simply shake their phones for a few minutes to get them recharged. The energy transferred in this way will be enough to make a call or two.
