OKI human-detecting medical sensorTOKYO, Japan – OKI has revealed a new ultra-sensitive human-detection sensor technology that can detect movements as minute as breathing, and it’s small enough to be fitted into smartphones for medical purposes.

The technology enables special microwave sensors to distinguish between large movements like walking and minute ones like breathing. As the sensors don’t require exposed units, they can be integrated into non-intrusive systems for better convenience. They can be used even in hot and humid locations, as they are unaffected by ambient temperature variations or heat sources like heaters. Their sensing capability is not hindered by furniture or bedding as well.

OKI is now seeking new areas for applying the technology, and choices range from security to monitoring patients and elderly people. This type of sensor will probably be installed in hospitals and nursing homes in the future, and may also be used for determining various health problems. Of course, smartphones with such motion sensors will be ideal to monitor patients remotely, and for sports enthusiasts as well.
