Sony Ericsson Xperia Play gamesSTOCKHOLM, Sweden – The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play has made a lot of news lately. With Android powering it and an upgraded GPU, the device is looking to cash in on the largely untouched mobile gaming market.

This is the first major competitor in the mobile phone/mobile gaming hybrid device category. There is of course the Nintendo 3DS, which launched recently, and the Sony PSP 2 NGP but those devices only do gaming. Then we have standard tablet and smartphone games which can be great time wasters but lack much depth that many serious gamers crave.

Sony Ericsson is looking to fill this gap with the Xperia Play which is a great piece of hardware including dual touch pad joy sticks. But a piece of hardware is only as good as the software support it can gain. The Xperia Play is looking like it will have plenty of developers behind it with a flood of game titles at launch time. Upon launching in Europe and parts of Asia within the next two weeks, developers are expected to have a library of 60 titles available for the device.

The developers include Sony Computer Entertainment, Gameloft, Electronic Arts and Glu Mobile and over 16 others. Some of the big name titles launching with the device are Assasins Creed Altair’s Chronicles HD, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, Dungeon Defenders, Gun Bros, Galaxy on Fire 2, Sims 3, FIFA 2010, Lost memories, BackStab, N.O.V.A., Need for Speed, Guns ‘n Glory, Worms, Zenonia 2, Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior, and Modern Combat Black Pegasus. Also, in addition to all the original titles the Xperia Play will feature a library of Playstation 1 original favorites including Crash Bandicoot.

The Xperia Play from Sony Ericsson is set to launch in Europe and Asia in the next few weeks and sometime this Spring for U.S. Verizon customers.
