BlackBerry OS6.1 “Major Upgrade” for Release in Spring

BlackBerry OS6.1 screenshotWATERLOO, Canada – A major upgrade to the BlackBerry operating system (OS) 6.1 is expected shortly from RIM.

The OS is the integral software of these devices, controlling all functions of the phone and most importantly, the user interface. Much has been said about the iPhone and Android OS’, simplicity of use, high graphic content, large amount of applications, and speed of response to commands.

BlackBerry has been third in the race since the introduction of Android last year. It is time for an overhaul and let’s hope, a leap forward for the OS. RIM has been alluding to improvements, and with the acquisition of QNX last year, we should see some great improvements for Current users of OS 6.0.

That was the good news. The other side of the coin is that users of OS 5.0 will be left behind. The devices that only run 5.0, don’t have the memory or processor power to work with OS 6.X. With all the effort and expense focused on OS 6.X, there is not much left for the legacy user base.

Expectations are high, hard facts are minimal, May is the target for releasing more information and perhaps demonstrations of the OS at BlackBerry World.
