Nokia 5800 v52 software updateESPOO, Finland – Nokia has released a firmware update for its old 5800 smartphone, which brings the device to version 52.

The 5800 is the company’s first device launched to counter the threat from the iPhone, and even though it was quite successful owing to Nokia’s aggressive campaign and release in both XpressMusic and Navigator forms, it wasn’t enough to deviate attention from Apple’s smartphone.

According to users, the update brings improved CPU performance, improvement in Wi-Fi connections, enhanced automatic display rotation, Ovi Maps, a new photos and videos app, but no change in the interface nor the addition of Nokia Email.

Brought to market in late 2008, the Nokia 5800 offered features considered high-end at the time, such as the 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, a 3.2″ resistive touchscreen display, microSD memory card support, a 3.5mm audio jack, GPS, stereo FM with RDS, HSDPA, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

What limited its popularity is the software it carries, Symbian OS9.4 with S60 5th edition, essentially a keypad-based operating system with added touchscreen functionality. It was poor in terms of interface, intuitiveness, and nowhere close to what Apple offered, not to mention the apps and games available from the iTunes App Store – the Ovi Store came at a much later stage, but with little to offer.
