Biometric Security Developed for Use with Nokia N900

Nokia N900 face trackingMANCHESTER, UK – The potential of open source operating systems is quite immense, and coupled with powerful mobile hardware, it can be very flexible, as showed by implementing a biometric system from a Nokia N900.

The smartphone is based on Maemo, a Linux distribution for handhelds, and is completely open, allowing developers to program all sorts of applications, ranging from Twitter-powered robots to slot cars controlled by the smartphone, as part of the Push N900 challenge. Now, Dr Tresadern, from the University of Manchester, has designed a program which is able to track faces by using a technique developed at the same university, called Active Appearance Model.

Instead of large hardware systems and powerful cameras, the algorithms developed by Dr Tresadern just need a mobile phone, and a small camera sensor, such as the one on the Nokia N900.

The method implemented is different to traditional face verification systems, whereas it doesn’t compare a recorded video to one at verification time, but it compares 22 tracked landmarks for authentication purposes.

If the N900’s back camera was used, which has a bigger sensor and captures images at 5 megapixels, and if the device was overclocked, the number of faces tracked – for airport security, as an example – could be increased.
