Calling All Innovators Contest Winners Named

Nokia Calling All InnovatorsJOHANNESBURG, South Africa – The announcement of  Nokia’s Calling All Innovators contest’s winners took place yesterday, and the winner application was Afridoctor who received the R600 000 (US$79 622) cash prize. The new application has been uploaded to Nokia’s Ovi Store and it is available for free.

On the conclusion of the competition, a reception was made for all category winners where the total cash and prize value of over R1 million was awarded to the top ten application-developers as well. In addition to this prize, each top ten developer received an extra prize consisting on a Judge’s Choice Award providing a one-year membership to Forum Nokia Launchpad, valued at EUR 300 (US$442).

The competition designed to be related to the South African environment received more than 125 submissions from developers in Africa mainly, but also in countries such as Pakistan, Germany, US, India and Bahrain. South Africa and Kenya were the two top countries where most of the developers originated, highlighting the potential on developing application that these two countries offers.

Helen Jarvis, the services marketing manager at Nokia South Africa, recognized that they had received a number of top quality entries and the winners had invested a significant amount of time and thought into their applications. As a result of this experience Jarvis added that “[Nokia looks] forward to working with the South African and African developer community going forward to continue providing the best mobile applications to consumers on the continent and worldwide”.

Apart from the contest information, Jarvis recognized that “the developers are the future of technology advancement and Nokia understands this; (…) It is for this reason that we recently hosted the Nokia Developer Days where over 62 companies were represented by 100 delegates from eight African countries, US, United Arab Emirates and Finland to talk about the future of mobile technology”.
