HELSINKI, Finland and ESPOO, Finland РTechCrunch reports that Nokia will aquire Dopplr, a social network and travel service.

Although not yet officially confirmed, the deal seems likely to occur and would follow in the footsteps of Nokia acquiring several smaller and service-oriented companies earlier this year.

Dopplr is a social network where users enter their future travelling plans. This allows users to detect when their plans overlap with colleagues and friends. The service also features functionality for sharing tips for travel destinations all over the world (such as sightseeing) as well as travel advice in general. Dopplr faces stiff competition from Tripit and hasn’t really reached mass appeal, but the service does have a loyal user base in place.

There are several personnel connections between Dopplr and Nokia already, the most obvious being Dopplr CEO and co-founder Marko Ahtisaari who has previously worked as the Director of Design Strategy at Nokia.

Nokia has announced a change in strategy lately, while the company will still be manufacturing mobile phones, the main focus is now on developing new services and on gaining market shares as a service provider. The several recent aquirements made by Nokia are generally seen as a way of widening the company’s service portfolio.
