Analysis: Nokia N97 vs Blackberry Storm 2

Nokia N97BlackBerry Storm 2With rumours of the upcoming Blackberry Storm 2 rapidly increasing, let’s take a look at how it compares on paper to Nokia N97.

There are no official announcements made regarding the new Blackberry Storm yet, but consistent rumours state that it will support Wi-Fi. The lack of Wi-Fi support is generally considered a big flaw on the original Storm model. The new model is also expected to host an increased amount of RAM, internal storage and an improved version of the SurePress touch screen.

If as expected, most of the remaining hardware specifications will be unchanged from the previous model, the amount of RAM and internal storage will be key when comparing the model to Nokia N97. The previous Storm featured 1GB of internal storage, and although it was packaged with an 8GB external memory card, internal storage will need to be increased massively not to pale in comparison with the N97 and its 32GB of internal storage. On the other hand, the previous Storm model featured 128MB of RAM – the same amount N97 has – so if that would also be increased it would give an edge over the N97.

The touchscreens on both devices have received some criticism. The N97’s screen will get improved scrolling and better performance as part of an upcoming firmware update, while it’s too early to tell which improvements will actually be present when the new Storm model is released and how they will effect the user experience.

Whether or not the new Storm model will feature an upgraded camera or any video output is not yet known, but regardless it’s not expected to rival the N97 as a media phone. Traditionally, Nokia’s Nseries models have been superior to all BlackBerry models regarding media functionality, while the BlackBerry models have held the edge regarding Office and e-mail functionality. Looking at these two models, there is no reason to believe this will change.
