16MP Camera Sensor with 4K Video Developed by OmniVision

omnivision camera sensor OV16820 OV16825SANTA CLARA, United States – OmniVision announced a duo of capture chips that are capable of producing 16 megapixel camera shots and 4K (quad HD) video recordings.

The chips will allow more devices similar to the HTC Titan II to be released in the market, but falls short of the Nokia 808 PureView’s 41 megapixel sensor.

The chips are designed with two main markets in mind – the OV16825 in die form is optimized with high end smartphones in mind, while the OV16820 in a ceramic land grid array is aimed at contemporary capture devices like photo and video cameras.

According to OmniVision, the main idea behind the chips is to answer the need of higher resolution and better quality capture sensors for main market devices in both niches – consumer video and photo cameras and high end smartphones. The company believes that the fact that most modern smartphones offer high quality of photo and video capture experience is not shrinking the market for dedicated capture devices, as they are constantly excelling and offer much more dedicated capabilities in their field.

OmniVision expects the new chips to enter mass production by the fourth quarter of 2012.
